No mistake about it but writing can be really difficult. I had to be disciplined. However, when I was doing some good work, it was a joy.

Any time I get stuck on anything, I start moving. I am most creative when I'm driving or walking. It can be a bit dangerous because I get so absorbed in thought, I miss my exit; nevertheless, it's movement that helps. If I'm still stuck, I talk it out with my editor because she asked the questions that helped me focus on the problem.

The best thing about being a writer is the realization that my words can have a profound affect on someone. It didn't hit home until I received feedback on my book. I am so very grateful that people who are moved by the story, share their emotion with me.

Don't stop until you see where the story takes you. Don't sabotage yourself in the beginning by thinking no one will be interested. If you are interested, if the story is worth telling, don't stop until you've published. Once it's published, the public decides whether or not they want to read it. It's then out of your hands. I've seen too many times in life where people get excited in the beginning of a project but lose interest in the hard work.

I was inspired by my grandson who is on the autism spectrum. One day my daughter called me from Ohio because Matteo was bullied at school. She asked if I'd speak to Matteo. These conversations never get easier. What do you say to an 8 year-old who is hurting? I answered, "Matteo, you have a golden heart. Think of yourself as a knight with armor that can help shield you from hurt." He said, "I like that." The conversation kept running through my mind and I began writing down ideas which eventually became The Boy With A Golden Heart.
