Amanda Jaeger Whenever I don't know what's supposed to happen next, I make a general note to myself. Something like "He didn't know how he got there..." and highlight it.

Then, I mentally have a chat with my characters. "All right, Richard. How DID you get to this place? What happened on the way there? And why is it important?" Nine times out of 10, I eventually get an answer. Then, I go back to that highlighted section and fill it in.
Amanda Jaeger Don't chase perfection as you're writing. Skip the scenes that aren't coming to you right away. Use a toned-down language when you're not sure of the right word to use. Write in fragments. Just get something down when your writing mood strikes. You have unlimited rounds of personal edits once that first draft is down.
