Robyne Stevenson The book is loosely based on the life of my great-aunt Ruth Reid. I knew her as a child and visited her there in her real-life Wynnewood apartment on the Philadelphia Main Line. She actually was a legal secretary and spent time in some of the social circles mentioned in the book. My great-grandmother Hannah was a feisty red-headed Irish woman who migrated here with her husband John. He was not a seafarer. Ruth had brothers and sisters and the character of Maurine is actually my grandmother Florence. My grandfather was Frank Stevenson. I lived near Philadelphia for a time and used Census records to go visit the addresses where they lived as young women near the Penn campus and Clark Park. The picture on the book cover is Ruth and Florence (Maurine) standing in that neighborhood. Don't they look like suffragists?
