L.L. Standage Oh gosh, I'm so boring. Haha! In all honesty, any question in everyday life can spark an idea for a novel. I often wonder where a forgotten dirt road leads, or what if I started flying right now, or what would happen if... (fill in the blank!). My mind is constantly imagining scenarios, both the otherworldly and sometimes the frightening (anxiety. It's the worst).
I will say this though: I grew up never knowing I had a step-uncle on my mom's side. I never got to meet him because he passed away by the time I learned about his existence, nor have I ever met my grandfather's first wife. Could make for an interesting story.... (can you feel the wheels starting to turn?!!)
L.L. Standage Too many books! The Songbook of Benny Lament by Amy Harmon and Otherwise Engaged are my ink-and-paper summer reads and Shattered Snow by Rachel Huffmire is my current audiobook.
L.L. Standage Can I pick more than one? Narnia, Hogwarts, and Meryton, Hertfordshire. In Narnia, I'd go to Cair Paravel to meet the kings and queens and of course look for Aslan. At Hogwarts, I'd explore. Take a class. Eat some food. Fly a broomstick. And at Meryton, I'd attend a ball, take a turn about the garden, and have a front-row seat to watching Lizzy and Darcy fall in love.
L.L. Standage I go for a run, free write, interview my characters, bang my head against the wall, drink too much diet coke, and eat too many chocolate chips.
Sometimes cry.
L.L. Standage Touching hearts and finding my tribe.
L.L. Standage Write a ton. Never delete your work. Find a support group. And learn ALL YOU CAN!! Never stop learning.
L.L. Standage I'm simultaneously editing Chasm, the sequel to Fathom, and drafting Reach, the third book in the series. I have several other projects on the back burner until the Fathom series is released.
L.L. Standage I got the idea for Fathom from many years visiting the beaches of San Diego and answering the question: what if a mermaid showed up on the shore? I got the original idea way back in 2007!
L.L. Standage Music often helps. Doing mindless exercise like running or biking also helps me work through plotting and coming up with ideas. As for sitting down to actually write, 75% of the time, I have to force myself to put my butt in the seat and work! It is said that inspiration comes, but it has to find you working.
