In 2014 I lost a friend who was separated from his packraft (portable inflatable boat) and drowned. Rob's death was a huge shock to my system partly because we had been cutting a lot of the same corners: wearing rain gear instead of drysuits, paddling when tired, cold, and so on. It could have been me.
I was forced to re-evaluate my relationship with recreation and risk. Ultimately, Rob's death put me on a track to study swiftwater rescue, become a certified instructor, and write The Packraft Handbook. I wrote this book to nurture a "culture of safety" that normalizes preparation and training. I wrote the book that Rob and I needed to read.
