Joey Contreras Writer’s block is the bane of all writers I suppose. I dealt with it by putting my draft down for a while and letting ideas percolate. Eventually you’ll be struck with a great idea— maybe even an epiphany— and your mental roadblock will lift.
Joey Contreras My most gratifying experience has been hearing from readers that they loved the book and can’t wait for the sequel. Many of my readers have law enforcement backgrounds and they are astounded at how accurately I captured the true nature of violent crime and how gangs really operate. Other readers are from my old Northside Houston neighborhood and are impressed how I captured the spirit of the Northside with such accuracy.
Joey Contreras Make it real! Make it compelling. Make it believable. Choose a subject with which you are quite familiar so that it the reader wonders where the author’s imagination ends and his real experiences begin. This realism, combined with a compelling writing style and story, make the book nearly impossible to put down.
Joey Contreras I have completed two follow up books to Sunday Morning Coming Down. The three form a trilogy and I expect to release the sequel, From Darkness, Light, soon. It will be followed by the release of A Fiery Dusk. All three are realistic crime/legal thrillers that draw heavily on my experiences as a longtime prosecutor and judge.
Joey Contreras I was a prosecutor for twenty-eight years, eighteen as a federal prosecutor who concentrated on organized crime and gangs. I then served as a judge. I handled countless interesting cases, many of them quite violent. It was my experiences with violent crime that sparked my interest in writing this book. In addition, I grew up in a rough neighborhood that I thought would be the perfect setting for the book. Realism was my goal and I think I captured the true nature of gangs, drug dealing, and my old neighborhood.
