When I get stuck, I tend to leave the keyboard and move to paper. I'll write journal entries from the perspective of characters, draw mind maps of connecting ideas, brainstorm what could happen, or plot using index cards.

1) Read as much as you possibly can and not just in the genre you write.
2) Don't attempt to write to the ever changing book market. Write what you love.
3) Be prepared for the long haul. Writing a book takes time and lots of revision. It isn't a quick process. But a great book is worth the effort.
