My editor asked me to write a "fish out of water story" set at an old-time Florida motel, which was appropriate because I grew up on Florida's Gulf coast, in St. Pete. I know that world very well. I knew my protagonist, Lettie, would be on the run from the law, and the rest? I just wrote it as it came into my head.
