I stick with the idea that if you get blocked you are taking the story in the wrong direction.

Be disciplined. Find a time and stick to it. Write everyday, even if some days the words don't come easily.
And if new ideas, 'better' more exciting ideas try to distract you, just write them down, file them away, and go back to what you were working on (I got a folder full of future project ideas doing this!).

Reading great books really puts a fire under me and gets my ideas flowing. Some TV shows or video games can do the same.
OR, I get annoyed at the way a storyline has gone in a book and start plotting out what I think should of happened - that can lead to some great inspiration too!

I tend to do a lot of world building, then when I have a world I want to write in I start thinking about characters. Once a character comes to me I then start thinking about their story - or how they fit into a story intrinsic to the world.
