When I run into the dreaded writer's block, I take a breather. Maybe a day or two and focus on something completely different. Then I write poems and/or short stories to get creative juices flowing. Sometimes I ask others to tell me something interesting that happened in their lives recently. These can spark new ideas.

The only bad story is one you neglect. Think of your story like clay. It's a giant heaping mess until you start to shape, mold, and chisel it into a beautiful masterpiece. Keep writing your masterpiece until the story is finished.

My inspiration comes from a desire to share a story. If I think of something that I feel is interesting, I want to share it with others. If you don't feel a passion to tell a story (or write one), it will take a long time to start, let alone finish. Writing takes time, and you must make time for it.

For me, story ideas come from a variety of things. I could be at a checkout line at a store and witnessing an interaction between two people. This could spark an idea and I will start creating interesting backstories in my head. I could see an old barn on the side of the road and think to myself, "Who was the last person in there?.... What if there is someone in there now?... What if they don't want to be in there?"
For Clifford's War, It started with a picture I took of an old Church in Brandywine, VA several years before I even started writing the book. I happened upon the picture on a "Remember when" timeline and the setting from the beginning chapter of the book just popped in my head, and Clifford Dee was born.
