Mary Armstrong I heard the sound of someone walking on dried leaves - kasprit ... kasprit ... kasprit, and then faster kasprit, kasprit, kasprit. I turned toward the sound and there, a screaming, blond-headed woman, her scalp half-taken, emerged from the desert willows and scrub brush with blood running down her face.
Mary Armstrong I have been living in 1880's Las Cruces, New Mexico Territory for about two years now. My series, "The Two Valleys Saga" is told through a memoir of the protagonist, Jesus Messi. I have become him - reading law, participating in court cases, finding my way in a new country and transitioning from a boy to a young man.
Mary Armstrong I read "News of the World," but other than DIY book marketing books that's all I had time for as I am finishing up Book Two of the "Two Valleys Saga" series.
Mary Armstrong Why I decided to change genders!
Mary Armstrong I've never had writer's block. Oh, sure, I've come up against plot problems, but usually that get's resolved with a walk, a shower, or relaxing for nap.
Mary Armstrong You don't have to depend on anyone for your creative outlet. Share what you like. Find an audience and you are on your way.
Mary Armstrong Write! The more you write and share your writing for critique, the better your writing will be. I was a horrible writer through most of my life. I didn't get the kind of education that I needed even when I showed an interest in writing. Throughout my career as a planner/designer I wrote far more than I could ever expected and clear concise writing became important in my jobs - especially when I worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Newton Corner, MA. There, my boss, Tom McAndrews red-lined my writing mercilessly! I worked and studied federally provided remote learning classes for grammar and writing. It's been over sixty years of learning and in my opinion, I still depend too heavily on my editor - thank goodness for Leigh Carter! :-)
Mary Armstrong Other than marketing this book, I am finishing up Book Two. I hope it will be available later in 2021.
Mary Armstrong I read, travel and research. Oftentimes research on a given subject/issue will yield a new storyline.
Mary Armstrong When I moved to Las Cruces - as with nearly all the places I've lived - I read about the history of the area. That was eleven years ago. I couldn't shake the story of the murder of Colonel Fountain and his eight-year old son. I read and read and read. I had been writing a novel in a different genre and finally put that aside and wrote a one-act play about the aftermath of the murders that was performed here in Las Cruces. From that developed the idea of a fictional memoir.
