My advice is to set aside a bit of time each day for writing, even if it's only 20 minutes. Make it a habit, like flossing. Skimming writing sites, attending conferences, and listening to podcasts about writing/publishing may be helpful, but none of those activities are writing. Writing is what makes you a writer.

I majored in journalism in college and have been a copywriter for decades, so being blocked has never been an option. I do sometimes let a project rest for a bit while I work on another story. Then I can return to the first story with fresh eyes.

I get inspiration from getting out and engaging with the world. It might be a visit to a museum. Or a quick stop at Target. Recently I completed a series of walking tours of local historic homes. Some of those houses deserve novels!

While it's ideal to have a computer with spelling and grammar checkers, all you really need is a decent pen and lots of paper. It's a very portable profession.
