Julee Balko A good walk in the woods inspires me. There are always lessons in the trees waiting for me. Whether it's how to grow, how to bend, or how to stay rooted. If I listen carefully, I can hear the words in the breeze.

I also love to watch life and the people around me. A mother with her child. A grumpy old man drinking coffee. Two friends laughing. The tiny things that make us human are what I watch for and get inspired by.

Julee Balko Finishing up my second novel! Which explores what happens when two neighbors who hate each other wind up empowering each other. Strong female characters. Yep. Some humor. Yep. An honest look at motherhood. Of course. Now I just need a literary agent. Because woo this author life is tiring. Ok, it's my kids that are tiring. Can an agent watch my kids too so I can finish it?
Julee Balko Write what moves you. Invest in armor for the querying trenches. Never give up.
Julee Balko I started writing The Things We Keep after my mother passed away because I was thrust into a world of grief that no one talks about. I have always been drawn to writing about interesting characters and complex relationships. I wanted to create characters that go way beyond your “let’s go shopping” kind of mothers. This book was especially written for women and men who are a part of the sandwich generation – those who are trying to take care of their aging parents while balancing parenting, a job, and multiple glasses of wine.
Julee Balko My favorite thing about being a writer has been that readers have reached out to me after they read my book. I knew a story that included grief and family dysfunction wouldn't be an easy read, but it could be a heartfelt one that could help others make sense of their past. I'm so grateful for every reader who has contacted me and told me how this story has moved them.
Julee Balko Motherhood mysteries like where did the missing sock go and why am I the only one who knows how to change the toilet paper roll?
Julee Balko It was Saturday. And I had to clean the bathroom.
