Simon Prentis Go and lie down and think of nothing, or just snooze for 20 mins. Always works a treat. Sometimes thinking too much gets in the way -- you have to allow thoughts to come to you from a deeper place.
Simon Prentis As Frank Zappa used to say when asked for advice to budding composers: "Get a real estate licence." Don't expect to make a living from it. Do it because you want to, or feel you must. It is its own reward.
Simon Prentis I'm working on a book called "Talking Funny For Money", a collection of stories about the many strange and unexpected experiences I've had whilst working as an interpreter. In parallel to that, I'm also working on a book about the musician Frank Zappa, who I worked with for many years. The working title is "I Don't Care If You Think It's Silly, Folks: The strangely sane world of Frank Zappa".
Simon Prentis Years of working as an interpreter, watching people getting lost in their own language and culture, unaware that every language and culture offers the same richness, the same intellectual and emotional intimacy. Without having the experience of another culture it's so easy to getting trapped inside an illusory sense of exceptionalism; I felt it would be helpful to show how that happens from the bottom up -- and what we can do about it.
