Doug Alderson Florida's Rivers, coming out September 1 of 2021, is the culmination of kayak journeys around the Sunshine State over several years. It is very satisfying to put my descriptions and observations together into one book along with more than 120 color photographs. The book pays homage to the incredible beauty and diversity of Florida's rivers and the need to protect them. I hope readers will come away with a strong appreciation of our rivers and will want to see them for themselves.
Doug Alderson I often write about places in the natural world, so a kayaking or hiking journey can often inspire me to write and do more research. I have also written books about historical sites and funky Old Florida attractions, so visiting some of these places can inspire me as well.
Doug Alderson I generally don't fret about it and finish projects around the house and yard that I have been putting off. Then, when I am ready for the creative juices to flow, I usually take a little field trip hiking or kayaking or a longer journey. That usually works! Reading the good work of other writers can also help.
Doug Alderson It helps to keep the mind and imagination active and I can discover new places, people and historical eras. I enjoy all aspects of the book writing process--the initial creative bursts, the steady pursuit of completing a book, the editing, and the book promotion.
Doug Alderson People say to write what you know, but you can also write what you want to know about because that involves more soul searching, research and sometimes travel. It is a great way to learn about a subject, place or people.
Doug Alderson I am working on two books. One is a book I have been writing off and on for several years. It is about life in a rural area of north Florida, a combination of funny, insightful and moving stories. The other is an all color book for Pineapple Press about the ways Florida has been promoted over the generations, keying on reoccurring iconic images. It is a fun romp through some colorful history.
