Join a community. There are loads of writing groups online (and IRL) and generous writers who give heaps of helpful free advice online. We all need encouragement and someone to ask questions. When you get stuck, get someone else to read your stuff - scary - but super helpful! And never underestimate the psychological challenges!

I'd been working for an International Aid and Development Organisation and we put on a National Conference for our supporters. We had speakers and workshops for kids, youth and adults. I put on a workshop for parents to think about the effect of consumerism on our kids and called it 'Raising Kids Who Care'. I'd put myself in a medium-sized room and pretty soon it was standing room only. I was amazed at the interest! I started researching the effects of consumerism, wealth and technology on our kids and pretty soon got pretty worried!
At this time though, I also met some outstanding kids who were meeting with politicians and raising money for kids overseas and they were thriving young people. Happiness research suggests caring is good for us. I realised though that we need to be thriving at home first, and then we can contribute more to the world.
I know parents are busy, so I tried to make it easy to talk about stuff like this at home.

Understanding that procrastination is fear helped me. I had to figure out what I was afraid of..
My father was absent and I (unconsciously) tried to achieve to 'earn' his love.
When I was stuck mid-way through writing my book I realised I was afraid of the very public failure that would come if I didn't write well. If achievement meant loveable, then failure meant...
Just understanding that helped me push through it.
