Micha Meinderts People kept saying I should write about my own life so eventually I budged and did it.

Most recent published book is the third part in a series so there wasn't a standalone idea. It's based on a plot and character from a role playing game I used to play.
Micha Meinderts I don't. Not in the traditional sense, anyway. Usually I have an idea, a scene, sentence, concept, that I try to work into a story and I see it happen in real time on the screen when I'm writing.

I don't know the feeling of being hit by a muse or whatever.
Micha Meinderts A novel roughly based on my own life experiences. It's both easy and hard to write about your own life: you don't have to think about how things would happen, because you know how they did, but to fit them in a story line that won't confuse the hell out of your readers is quite the challenge.
Micha Meinderts Read! You can't write if you don't read. Increase your vocabulary, get the hang of spelling and grammar, hone your tools so you can use them with perfection. Know what other people think and do, both fictional characters and the writers. Analyse why you (don't) like a novel. Learn from the best.
Micha Meinderts Getting messages from readers saying you changed their life for the better. And compliments/admiration.
Micha Meinderts The first few days I'll just do something else, provided I don't have a deadline. If it hasn't resolved itself by resetting my brain, I'll just start writing random bullshit, until something good comes out, or at least something decent I can edit into something good.

I don't start doing the bullshitting right away because the aftermath isn't as pleasurable as leaving it for a few days and getting back in the flow then.
