Her Dying Day is very loosely based on Agatha Christie's disappearance. A mystery author mysteriously vanishes? Yes, please! But I wanted to take it from the 1920s to the 2000s and then have a modern (2022) filmmaker develop a documentary about what happened. Because of course there would be podcasts, documentaries, and blogs about a famous author disappearing and never being seen again. Look at Maura Murray. We're always going to be searching for her.

I love putting together the perfect sentence. Sharp, funny, with some kind of insightful nugget of truth to seem almost profound. I also love creating characters. People are messy and I like to make messy heroes. They don't always make the best decision, but they learn from their mistakes and come out a better person than where they started.

Get the words on the page. Toss them at the screen like waterballoons filled with paint. You can figure out the prose later, but get those ideas out of your head and into print.

I always enjoy Agatha Christie, but May Cobb and Brianna Labuskes are quickly becoming favorites.

I start writing something else. A newsletter or a blog post. Or I'll bake something--muffins, cookies, bread, cakes. It's like cross-training the creative part of my brain.

I heard an interview with Toni Morrison where she said she started writing because there was a story she wanted to read and since she couldn't find it in her bookstore she decided to write it herself. There were all these characters and stories I had floating around in my head that I really wanted someone write and I realized that it was up to me to write them.
