Read lots, then read some more. Get proper sleep as being mentally tired is a killer. Then it's just a case of sitting your arse down and typing, even if it's just a single paragraph. Discipline is the key.

I remember being friends with a boy when I was 4, only for him to not be around after a while. When I was twenty or so, my Mum mentioned a local tragedy where, after a bad marriage breakup, the Dad lost it and took a shotgun to his two sons, then himself. She said I was devastated by losing my friend, inconsolable for days.

Read a lot, but also read widely. Don't just stick to your favourite genre, go looking for the big guns of literature. Dostoevsky, Hemingway, Ishiguro, Atwood, et all are held in high regard for a reason. Read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest.
