A few years ago I had the idea for a story about a couple who eat nothing but one another. That was really all I had to it, and I couldn't figure out a way to make it more interesting to myself at the time, so I put it on the shelf.
Then, in late 2024, I started a new job. One of my colleagues had Crohn's disease and remarked one day that his condition makes it hard for him to gain weight. I mused to myself that, as someone with Hashimoto's, I had the opposite problem. I got to reading about how so-called carnivore diets could actually benefit people with these autoimmune conditions, but only in the short term. And from there I remembered my little germ of a cannibal couple story. The rest came together very quickly and easily from there.
