Waaah I miss summer. But I did read The Flat Share by Beth O'Leary which I adored, while lounging by a pool in south west France. Don't be jealous - I was surrounded by screaming kids and injuries.

That I can finally have the chance to be creative. It has taken decades of teaching, and child-rearing to finally feel I can have the time to write. I applaud anyone who has got themselves on it quicker than I have. Back in my early twenties I was desperate to write a book. Two decades later....

Be disciplined and don't beat yourself up if you can't cram it in. To get the book finished, last year I would set my alarm at 6am and work in the lodge in my garden until 8am, when the kids were starting to get moving. And it has taken nearly as long as that to get it edited. It's a labour of love, but so rewarding to write those immortal words: 'The End'.

Recently, I have been plucking out odd historical events from different countries and working out a way of incorporating them into Adaline's world. In the first book, the warlock Wilkin uses mummified fingers from dead warlocks of the past for sorcery. I got this idea from discovering that many saints' mummified fingers are actually kept in ornate glass cases in Venice. I have been to Venice twice and never discovered them! Though I did go and see the ancient mummified nun in Bologna, so I may fit her in at some point in a story!

About six years ago I had an idea for a world that had been conjured, but was a little flawed. I thought the idea of characters that had escaped from the world to Earth to hide due to events out of their control could make for a story full of secrets that could be slowly uncovered. I had to work backwards from these revelations and learn how to cover them up at the start of the tale! I also wanted to have a story that echoed injustice on Earth, so you could say Adaline and the Sphere is an allegory.
