Brien Feathers I'm one of those "the characters speak to me" writers; so, I don't 'get' the idea as much as I discover it by letting the characters tell their stories.
Brien Feathers I get to write and get paid for it, eventually :)
Seriously though, I fall in love with my characters and I believe they live when you read. So the best thing about being a writer is breathing life by finding readers.
Brien Feathers By reading, living, and dreaming.
Brien Feathers I've just finished the first draft of book 5 of my ongoing dark fantasy series, Light of Adua. Now begins the real writing, I suppose (I do multiple page 1 rewrites).
Brien Feathers I'm still aspiring myself but what I would say to any author, including myself, is that writing is a craft, and we have to respect it as such. Storytelling is natural to us, yes. But the writing itself, or telling it well, is a craft.
Brien Feathers My college professor used to say, "Writer's block is a reader's block." He was a craft of poetry professor, but I think it's true in prose as well.

Personally for me, if I'm having a difficult time writing, it's because either I didn't do the research I was supposed to, or my plot is not working and I've taken a wrong turn somewhere. I don't force plot on characters, and allow them to take their natural arc. So if they're having a fit, I have to rework the story.
Brien Feathers I love old Japan. I would go to the land of warlords, and live as a Sakura tree.
Brien Feathers His Majesty's Dragon, Naomi Novik
Dreams of Dying, Nicolas Lietzau
Certain Dark Things, Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Contain, Saul Tanpepper
