As a fiction writer new to the scene and having completed my first WIP, I'd say stick to your writing and be ready to make changes to your plot and style while you're writing. Let the story flow and let it guide you. Let it talk to you. If you don't feel it, your readers won't. And don't give up if your first story gets rejected or people don't like it that much. It's your first one; don't make it your last just because it's not perfect!
