I'm currently in the process of publishing a middle-grade novel called The Garden Bone, which I wrote a few years ago and have been obsessively editing since. The story is about a moody, twelve-year-old kid whose paleontologist parents died in a mysterious accident during a dig in Wyoming. The kid, Wences Killean, finds an unexpected fossil in his backyard, a fossil impossibly there. Enlisting the help of his BFFs Matteo and Jeanine, he sets out to discover what the fossil is and how it could have been ended up there, a journey that takes them out of this world... and into trouble.

The Hover came to me originally as a single image, that of a floating dead cat. I had that image in my head for a long time, trying to figure out why that cat was there, how could it be hovering? I started writing the first story in the novella, a very sad and violent story, and as I was writing, I asked myself, what if the whole sky was suddenly full of dead matter? What would life be like? The next five stories all came out of that. I purposefully didn't want it to be a traditional sci-fi/horror-type story -- I wanted to explore how everyday people would handle the situation, which is why I think of this as a literary work occurring in a unique setting rather than a genre-specific work.
