Julia Stone The answer to this has to be Alice Through the Looking Glass, which was one of my favourite books as a child. It would be such an amazing experience to see Lewis Carol's world and meet the strange creatures that live there.
Julia Stone There are three things that I have found particularly helpful. 1) Reading, both within your genre and more widely to inspire creative ideas. Learn from other authors. Read like a writer and analyse how the story has been told. 2) Form or join a supportive writing group. I have been part of a group for the past four years and we have helped each other through every step of the journey with encouragement, advice, feedback and white wine! 3) When you are ready, enter competitions. There are some great opportunities out there.
Julia Stone Inspiration can come from anywhere and I keep every quote, photo, or article that has sparked a creative thought. When I start developing a theme for a novel, my first move is to create an image bank or collage for my characters and their world. I need to see them, to visualise their environment in order to understand them. Coming from a psychology background, I am interested in behavioural ticks, habits, thought patterns and ways of seeing the world. I often draw up a psychological profile for the main characters. Each new idea for a novel gets its own notebook which is soon densely packed with outline ideas, sketches, mind maps, scribbles and midnight thoughts.
