By writing something else. I started book 2 in the series during NaNoWriMo. As a historical novel that needs research, it was hard to keep up the daily word counts and a couple of times I got stuck. I switched to a blog post or working on my newsletter and found I could come back to it later.

Write. Write. Write. When I started off, my son had challenged me to a course he was doing where you wrote a chapter a week, 250 words/day. I accepted the challenge and once I got started, it became easier to do. Much of it was garbage at first, but ideas were born.

I've always enjoyed Colonial American history. But the idea was born when I was at a Folk Music Festival and a friend's band was covering Mark Knopfler's song 'Sailing to Philadelphia' about Mason and Dixon's arrival in 1763. A woman in the stands said loudly, "oh, those are the guys that decided which states would fight on the north or the south in the Civil War." I had been thinking about writing a mystery and decided on the spot to set it then and let people learn the truth.
