When you're a journalist, people sometimes confide in you stories about strange things that have happened to them or those close to them - on condition that their names are not published. In a few cases those confidences are about activities that are criminal in one way or another. Now and again, they even concern the most serious crimes - murder and robbery. It was when my bag of secret confessions became too full to hold any longer that I sat down and wrote my short story collection True Stories. I've also slipped in one story that is completely made up - to cover myself in case anyone gets the mistaken idea that I'm covering up unsolved crimes!
