I wanted to combine my research into life in the Staffordshire Moorlands in the Edwardian era with a fictional plot. I've previously researched the lives of real-life photographers and my central characters of the new novel, The Buried Secret are - funnily enough - a photographer and his teenage daughter, both of whom turn amateur detective.

I'm on the look-out for ideas from all sorts of sources. As I'm particularly interested in the Edwardian era I look at old photographs I've collected - events as well as un-named personalities - old newspaper reports, museum visits.

Have a plan for the shape of the book (even if you change it later). Have a target for how much you want to write - a certain number of words a day/week, a chapter a month or something like that. It's also good to have an overall deadline (as an ex-newspaper man I'm all too familiar with deadlines).

As well as the fun of creating the story, the great pleasure in meeting readers and hearing their comments (especially if they're positive!). It's actually quite humbling how enthusiastic readers can be.

Find something else to do regarding the book rather than producing words - e.g. checking on research, playing with the design. As I self-published I was also responsible for the cover and internal artwork
