Doug Emery My life. I write about what I do and what I know. Many of my stories are total fact, all have a basis of fact and occurrences in my life, those with bodily harm generally come from me adding to an occurrence I have experienced that could have ended very differently.
Doug Emery By everyday life. I enjoy how the normal mundane aspects of our day to day life, can turn on a dime based upon our choices and the choices of others we have no control over.
Doug Emery Book II of my Trevor McCowen series. It is finished , but in its raw form. First set of edits are complete, going back through it for added details to story line and character. Book III story line has already been crafted and is awaiting my full attention.
Doug Emery Start writing something, anything. The actions of your day, the quiet moments in a conversation, the tone and staccato of an argument. Get the snippets out of you and onto the page. You simply can not expect to remember those deep crafted details at some later date when you have the need for them in story form. The story you will use those gems I will show up as you continue to work your words on the page.
Doug Emery I don’t consider myself a writer. I see it as a form of journaling, of getting things out of me and onto paper. Once I have it out of me it no longer troubles my current thoughts. Best example would be writing a dream down, once I have written it in clear detail, I rarely have the same dream again, but until I get those images and stories out of me, they often times come back again and again.
Doug Emery Go do something else unrelated to your writing, allow the “problem” to just be, in the back of your mind. Ideas will start to jell, I keep a small tablet of paper on me, and jot down thoughts, images and ideas as they show up in my awareness. Doing other things, any other thing, is how I unlock my brain to blocks.
Doug Emery I woke from a dreamlike sleep, naked, a hypodermic needles hanging from my arm, a heavy rubber band laying loose around my biceps, cold, so cold I feel that death had been stalking my soul, covered in sticky fresh blood, unsure of my surroundings, not clear of what has occurred. As I sit up in this large king bed, white sheets also covered in fresh blood, I spot the naked form of my wife’s lifeless body, laying on the deep pile carpet floor, her severed head is sitting on the coffee table staring lifelessly back at me.
Doug Emery I would go to the world of Conan the Barbarian, masterfully crafted by Robert E Howard. I could never imagine myself as Conan, however being in the presence of someone you know is a true force of power is a feeling and honor all its own. Traveling through the land of the Picts would certainly be part of that adventure. The book covers alone tell an amazing story; Frank Frazettz could really capture an image in action!
Doug Emery Brad Taylor’s Pike Logan series, Mark Greaney’s Gray Man series and Joey Madia’s Jester-Knight from the Amber Dragon Tales, all of them here on Goodreads.
Doug Emery Doing Private Investigation work, following a man for three days is an interesting process where the unexpected occurs all too often.
The books I have written are all based on my own life experiences. Each chapter has a basis in fact, most I have added some level of flavor or excitement.
