I've engaged with many incredible fictional worlds in my reading that would be difficult places to visit in my actual life because of the tragedies involved, but I'd be happy to board the cruise ship in Amanda Eyre Ward's The Jetsetters and travel around Europe or visit Jennifer Steil's 1940s La Paz, Bolivia, as described in her novel Exile Music.

I'm currently working on a novel that moves between 2008 and the late 1930s in the US. I think of it as my road trip novel, although there's much more to it than that.

I was studying interconnected story collections in the fall of 2009 when I began writing the first stories for my book. I loved that the stories in the collections I read could stand on their own and also incorporate novel-like features such as recurring characters and themes. It seemed the perfect way to tell the story of a community.
