Deb Whalen Despite years of writing, working through Always, Always Choose Again was an uncharted adventure. Fiction—intentional fiction, anyway—was a new venue for me and ideas flew into the keyboard as though each chapter could be my last. Many classicists may embrace that possibility. But as there is much more of Eli and Ted’s story waiting to be told, that’s a persistent inspiration to fill in those chapter outlines.
Deb Whalen Same advice I’ve always been given. Write, write, write! You can only get better. Just juice-up your intercranial synapses and let those neurons roll.
Deb Whalen Relative anonymity, if you prefer it. A writer’s level of enjoyment depends on the project and your preferences. Working on print publications requires teamwork and lots of collaboration, which can be as challenging as it is fun. Writing as a project consultant or for a busy individual can be intense, but very satisfying.
Except for the fact-finding, composing is a solitary process and that works well for me. Most days my comfy jeans, a pullover sweater, and socked feet comprise the dress code for my tiny writing nook. And as many new to working from home can attest—that’s a sweet perk.
Deb Whalen If I've had it, I didn't recognize what it was. Having projects stacked in a mental holding pattern helps keep me focused. No time to fret!
Deb Whalen Just started the follow-up to Always, Always Choose Again.
Deb Whalen As a writer, noticing unusual situations often spark the storyteller in me. Creating narratives for scenes playing out as the day unfolds has become a habit. This book was sparked by many of those observances--but especially a quiet neighborhood suddenly populated with a group of fun-loving single women, a tricky love story, and my fascination with these gorgeous Georgia mountain settings.
