Get yourself a few marble notebooks, a PEN you really like, and write, write, write! Write about anything that interests you, daily events, simple things like a great conversation with a friend, or an irate telemarketing phone call, or the way the leaves fall off the trees in the fall, ... Anything and everything you experience or think about, write it down. Something will catch fire and lead to a masterpiece. Always have a marble notebook in your hand or backpack, and especially the pen you like at the ready. It's your sword.

I belonged to a writing group called Pen to Paper, which met for a little over an hour every week in La Jolla, California. We were given a prompt and had twenty minutes to write. Then we read our stories to a group of about 10-15 writers from all walks of life. It gave me the idea to take many of those writings and develop them into a collection of short stories, which became my latest book entitled "Cargo of Shorts: 101 Short Stories for the Casual Reader."

I studied St. Jerome in the seminary. He is best known for his translation of the Bible into Latin (the translation that became known as the Vulgate) and his commentaries on the whole Bible. Jerome attempted to create a translation of the Old Testament based on a Hebrew version, rather than the Septuagint, as prior Latin Bible translations had done. To write such a book as the Bible is just beyond the pale.
