I am doing a creative writing paper and playing around with a novel where the main character quits her job and moves to NYC. Cliche, I know. But beyond being about a quarter-life crisis, of sorts, it is about breaking free from what the world expects of you, and choosing joy.

Five years ago a wonderful and terrible thing happened to me. I became infatuated with someone who was completely unacceptable in the eyes of my Arab-Muslim upbringing. This forced me to grapple with really hard questions like:
- Where does my loyalty lie, to my happiness or that of my parents?
- Am I a New Zealander of Arab?
- What do I want my life to look like?
This book was the product of grappling with these big, hard questions. Questions I think lots of adult children have to grapple with as we learn to be ourselves outside of our parents.
