Brittany Phillips I deal with this a lot. When inspiration strikes, the baby wakes up, or I have to get something else done. When I am able to sit and write, my mind is so tired it can't come up with anything worthwhile. That's the thing about writing, you have to take advantage of that raw inspiration if it's going to be authentic. This whole process does make it take longer.
Brittany Phillips To me, it's self-satisfaction. When it's finally, finally done you feel so proud of yourself (as you should!) it all becomes worth it. Our art, because it is art, is what makes us unique.
Brittany Phillips My advice would be to not give up as trite as it may sound, even though children and the daily duties of life may slow down the process. Think of the tortoise and the hare. It took Gone With The Wind a decade to be finished before it ever saw the light of day!
Brittany Phillips I had an idea for an anthology book a few years ago that I published as a short story. Since then I changed my aspiration to continuing the first one as a longer book, so it is no longer available to purchase as a stand-alone story.
If I can ever complete it, It is called Roseline and is inspirational historical fiction. I'm searching for an agent now before I have it published. Perhaps one day I will finish the other two but for now, they are shelved.
Brittany Phillips I think most poets just have a constant dialog going in their heads. The words are beautifully written, and something as simple as a song or movie makes that special lightbulb moment happen, where we think, "This is it, I have to jot that down."
Brittany Phillips A friend of mine I made during quarantine was a fellow poet and actually got me re-inspired after she published her first two poetry books. So I thought, I can do that too!
