The smell of blood wafted in from the open window in the living room where the sound of rustling came from. I looked out the window and could see the silhouette of a man stepping into the woods mere feet from the window with what looked like a severed head.

A Song of Ice and Fire's Westeros and latch myself to a lord or house by using my modern learning. Or the world of Naruto and learn to be a ninja if I had the ability. I'm a big fan of both worlds.

Leigh Bardugo's Rule of Wolves series. And perhaps a biography of one of the 19th century US Presidents, perhaps Taylor or the first Harrison, undecided.

My grandmother was born as a result of an affair and was put up for adoption. The affair between my biological great-grandmother and her extra-marital lover might be an interesting story. My family knows very little about her biological family. A lot of mystery.

I work on a different project. When I experience writer's block, it usually means I cannot go further on this one project, but I may have ideas that can further another project along so I'll go where the inspiration leads. If I am fully blocked and cannot add to anything, I take a break for a day or so and do something. Go talk to friends, visit family, listen to music or watch a movie. All you need is a trickle of inspiration to write a couple of meaningful words that lead to a paragraph, chapter, or even a novel.

Hearing someone say the name of a character that was once a figment of your imagination is the most surreal and amazing feeling. Knowing someone liked something you wrote and is forever changed by that is a true gift.

My advice is to write your stories regardless of whether you will be paid or not. Self-publish if you need to. If one person besides a family member or friend likes your writing it means the world to us. Set aside an hour or two every day and write. You cannot write if you don't write. Go where the inspiration leads you, unfettered and raw.

12/18/2022 I am currently working on a vampire novel. I have always loved the genre and am looking forward to adding to the folklore myself. I am also working on the fourth installment of my "The Things That Stare at Us From Trees" short story series. And to a lesser degree, I've been putting together ideas for a prequel and sequel to "It Happened Over the Lake."

Most of the time, a certain rhythm in a song or the feel of some music puts a scene into my mind and I start a story based off of that scene. The scene could be absolutely unrelated to the song's lyrics, I just go off the feel and rhythm.

"It Happened Over the Lake" started out as an idea I've had for many years where an alien invaded Earth above Lake Michigan and a bystander witnessing the coming chaos gets contacted by another alien via telepathy and he has to turn his body into energy in order defeat the invading alien. After the boy defeats the alien he is now dead. The telepathic alien resurrects him and her followers on Earth who are a secret organization of government officials and billionaires aid the boy in his second life. The story I wrote differs from the original idea to give some reality.
