Write, write, write every single day, even if it's 100 words. Study your craft. Don't settle for one or two writing books. Buy them all and read them. I recommend Dara Marks, Lisa Cron, Blake Snyder, etc. Screenwriters know how to craft a tight story. Pick up screenwriting books and apply what they teach you to novels. It's a seamless transition.

Choosing the imaginary characters with whom I get to spend my time. I drop in members of my favorite band just so I get to hang out with them.

My writer's block came from not knowing where I was going with the story. I only suffer from writer's block if I'm not on my mental health medications, because I can't concentrate long enough to plot out a book. If I know what I'm writing, I can ALWAYS write.

I'm not sure about mysteries, but all of my books are autobiographical in one way or another. I grew up in poverty, which was the inspiration for Two Buck Hope. I suffer from eco-anxiety, which was the inspiration for The Problem with Hope, and I have two more books in the pipeline. Both of those relate to my life, since I've lived a crazy one.
