Peter R. Hall I love writing and my problem is not how to start but how to stop! My brain seems to pick up ideas and store them away for when I need them. For example, I needed an antagonist for my latest book but didn't want a two-dimensional character. Then I remembered a documentary about Henry XIII where it was speculated that his personality changed after a jousting accident which left him unconscious. His actions changed after that injury and he become much darker. That would be perfect for my character. He would start off as a nice guy but become evil after a brain injury. How long would his friends remain loyal him?
Peter R. Hall Everybody can write and so there is a tendency to think anyone can start writing a novel. In my view, the skills and craft of writing are as difficult to learn as a musical instrument and it takes practice, practice, practice to excel at it. My advice is to write something, leave it for a couple of weeks and then revisit it with fresh eyes. Edit and improve it. Keep doing that until every word is perfect. Keep writing new stuff but keep revisiting existing stuff and see how you can make it better.
I also find that putting my manuscripts through ProWritingAid is a huge learning curve and well worth doing to find out how your writing compares to established authors.
Peter R. Hall When I'm writing and in full flow, I'm transported to a different world and time seems to disappear. Hours can seem to go by in seconds. Sometimes when I read back my work - especially if I have not seen it for a while - I become quite excited about it.
Peter R. Hall So far, this has not troubled me. Quite the opposite, I never get enough time to write and always have more ideas and enthusiasm than time.
Peter R. Hall Book 5 of my Yellow Death Chronicles series. I am also in the planning stage of a guide to writing post-apocalyptic fiction.
