I made a number of bad parenting decisions that led to my son's placement in therapeutic schools that restrained or isolated him when he defied expectations. He was also heavily medicated. If not for skiing, and the opportunity to see a different child away from home and school, I'm not sure where Ryan would have ended up.
I was inspired to tell Ryan's story to aid other parents in making better decisions if their toddler was neurodivergent.

The book I co-authored with my son (Without Restraint) is set for release March 1st. We are in the pr-order stage, and we recently began working with our publicist at Globe Pequot. We are drafting talking points and Q&A for media pitches. It is time consuming but my son and are both playing around with ideas for second books.

From first draft to a manuscript pitched to agents and publishers, hundreds of rounds of edits happen. Don't worry about perfection in the beginning. Just get something on screen or paper every day even if it is only a few paragraphs or a bit of dialogue between characters.

By the time Ryan reached high school he had been through so much. Schools that restrained him, doctors who overprescribed medication, and some bad parenting decisions. At the same time, he was one of the most accomplished backcountry skiers around, so I always thought his story would resonate.
As we traveled to Antarctica in 2018, our ship lost Wi-Fi, so for ten days we had no contact with the outside world. With little else to do, I asked Ryan if he was willing to share his story and he agreed. We decided to write separately and whenever we had downtime after ski touring, we banged away on our phones. A few months later, we had a draft. Not a very good draft, but it was a start.
