Not to sound like Dory here, but literally I just keep writing. I'll make a loose outline before I start writing a story; nothing serious, just enough to get the wheels turning. But sometimes while I'm in the middle of a book, I can feel the story wanting to go in a different direction, so I'll follow where the story itself is trying to go.
Every now and then, I need to back track and do some rewrites. Sometimes you need to write what the story isn't before you can realize what the story is supposed to be.

At first it started as a need. I've always had a wild imagination, and even as a kid I sometimes would just fantasize these outlandish tales. Writing was my outlet to set those stories free from my mind so I could just move on. But now it's more of a divinely appointed calling of some sort. As I've gotten older, those stories have become more elaborate and lifelike, and I feel a responsibility to put those stories out into the world. And now, I am writing with the idea in mind of "What will I most proud to have done?" when looking back on my life 20 or 30 years from now.

Write what you love, because if you don't love it, it will show in your writing. And if you love it, odds are you aren't alone, and somewhere out there is an audience just waiting to discover you.
And don't get discouraged. Just as there are people who will love what you write, there are definitely people who won't. Overall, don't get caught up in it. Write what you love and trust your target audience will eventually find it, and don't change based on the opinions of people who don't like your work because I don't think you should take criticism from people you wouldn't take advice from. If someone didn't like your work, then it wasn't for them. Move on.
