S.E. Chandler From the depths of sleep, you hear his tiny voice call through the nursery wall.
"Mommy, poop is coming out."
S.E. Chandler When I finish a story or book and I know it's done. I can walk away and get my life back.
S.E. Chandler Start somewhere. Anywhere. And never give up. Find a tribe. And don't let them give up either.
S.E. Chandler I remember driving over the Arkansas River on I-430 thinking about a story where couples stay married for 100 years or longer. My grandparents were about to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary and I started to wonder, as we live longer, how do we get better at staying together and in love longer.
I talked about the idea of the story with a friend on a road trip, putting together some bones of a futuristic world where people lived a really long time and also stayed married for a century. The conversation drifted to Soylent Green and I put it away for a long time.
In a subsequent marriage, I started learning about techniques to build longevity in a relationship. On a hike in the North Carolina Arboretum, my 2nd wife and I started talking about it more. Ehra was originally Omeo, but I needed rising action, so I stuck her between worlds and started twisting the knives.
S.E. Chandler I'm a magpie. I take from what I see and people I know. I also have voices in my head that I call characters. They show me scenes and conversations. I just write them down.
S.E. Chandler I'm working on a "Straight Girls" series that takes traditional tropes, like Girls Trip, Girls Night Out, and throw in some straight chicks converging with Lesfic. So some toaster oven-earning fun!
S.E. Chandler I use a prompt, set a timer and let myself free to write the worst stuff in the world.
S.E. Chandler I'm in an MFA program, so I'm reading stuff for class:
Reading Like a Writer: A Guide For People Who Love Books and For Those Who Want to Write Them by Francine Prose; and
Writing Fiction, A Guide to Narrative Craft, 8th edition by Janet Burroway
