Robyn Gram-Barclay My son's favourite sea creature is a Blue Whale (has been since he was a toddler) and I just knew that this would make for a fun story. The book is written as a poem, short and simple, yet sweet...and one open for a possible series! One of my family's favourite destinations is the aquarium, so taking photographs on many of our visits provided visual inspiration, as well. I have assigned sea creature watercolour paintings with my students over my years as an art teacher and felt that this particular media would work perfectly for the illustrations in my book. It all came together from there!
Robyn Gram-Barclay I would advise to write about what you know and what you would love to learn more about! I love poetry and being a teacher of Primary/Junior students, the rhyming format is often catchy, easier to read (regarding the flow) and entertaining.
My son and I also love sea creatures, so I felt I would delve into a story about that subject matter, as it interests us both. Plus, as an illustrator, I felt I could do this story justice with the imagery to follow. It was a ton of fun to create the characters visually, to the original written word.
