I recently found out my mother's real parents died in a hail of gunfire while trying to rob a gas station in Butternut, Wisconsin in 1931, ending a brief spree of petty holdups that didn't capture the public's imagination the way they had hoped. While they were on the lam, they entrusted their daughter to the care of a Swedish circus dentist, and an infamous Canadian torch singer called the "Winnipeg Warbler." who raised her from infancy, and who I thought were my grandparents for most of my life.

I binged on Dread Journey, The Expendable Man, The So Blue Marble, and In a Lonely Place by Dorothy B. Hughes and The Callahan Crosstime Saloon series by Spider Robinson. I just started reading Mick Herron on a friend's recommendation, and will probably be bingeing on him well into the winter.
