I happened to be reading an article discussing the possibility of recreating mammoths by means of cloning. I found it quite interesting how some scientists not only felt that it wasn't feasible, but that it was impossible to genuinely re-create a species if it was no longer living in its natural environment surrounded by others of its own species; that while it may look like a mammoth, it wouldn't really be one. It started me thinking about how if humans became extinct, and an alien species visited Earth and discovered human remains, would they think it worth trying to re-create us? The idea for a book based on that concept started to grow, and by the time I had got partway through the first book, I realized it was going to have to be a series.
