Michelle Bennington I don't have many issues with writer's block because I always work on more than one book at a time. This is helpful because if I hit a wall in the plot on one book, I can move over to the other book and work on that one. I also practice more than one art form (painting, dance, crochet, etc.) which is useful for freeing the mind to focus on something other than the writing. The few times I have dealt with writer's block it was one of two things: I didn't have a clear plan for the plot or I was stressed, burned out, and needed a break. Sometimes, you have to give yourself permission to take a break and do something else to replenish the creative well; this is where having another hobby or art practice can be helpful.
Michelle Bennington Developing entire worlds and people. I think that's my favorite part.
Michelle Bennington It sounds cliche but it's true: Never quit. Never give up.
Also, learn the difference in constructive criticism and placating comments like "that's great" or "everything's fine." Placation is not helpful; it keeps your writing weak and strokes your ego. Constructive criticism is helpful; it will help you improve. It will shine a light on your weaknesses. When you know your weaknesses, you can work to make them stronger.
Michelle Bennington Lots of things: the 3rd book in the Small Batch series; a historical mystery series that I just signed with Level Best Books; a self-publishing project; and a couple of serious historical fiction stories based on true crime events.
Michelle Bennington I used to wait for inspiration, but now I don't. Now, I see writing as an act of discipline. I write whether I feel inspired or not. It's kind of like going to the gym: a lot of times I don't want to do it, but once I begin, I get into it and become more motivated.
Michelle Bennington In short, it was inspired lightly by the real-life Pappy Van Winkle bourbon heist and a ghost tour I attended at the Buffalo Trace Bourbon Distillery in Kentucky.
Michelle Bennington I would go back to the world in Pride and Prejudice, befriend Lizzie, and probably vie for Darcy's attentions, though I'd most assuredly be cast aside because he loves Lizzie. So, I'd have to settle for one of his friends--maybe his cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam.
Michelle Bennington I have a video of my 2022 list on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFXQ...)
But to name a few: Here Comes the Homicide by Erin Scoggins; The first in the Poldark series. Ross Poldark; The First Detective Vidocq.
I have a huge TBR pile for the year and I've already gone off the plan and have read 3 or 4 books I hadn't planned to read. LOL. But when I see an interesting book, I just can't help myself.
