Holly, I'm pretty much a pantser. I start with an idea for characters and then throw them into a problem that needs to be solved. As I write, I learn a great deal about characters. Sometimes, I'm surprised by the direction the plot takes.

Throw the "rule" book away and write what you like. If you like it, someone else will too. (Pull the "grammar" book and dictionary out before submitting your story to agents and publishers-they want to know you have a command of the language.) Have fun.

A "what if" question popped in my head when thinking about the Vietnamese immigrants in Biloxi, Mississippi, and a possible conflict harbored by an American veteran of the Vietnam War. I wrote a draft of the first chapter and then had my characters solve the problem.
