I'm a huge fan of many cyberpunk works, which is evident in the authors I listed as my favorites. However, what always stuck out to me is that it's all relatively far future. So I got to asking myself what the gap period would be like, from present day to that cyberpunk future. I didn't have to look far of course, as many things happening today in the world of politics, science, power and money can easily be extended into that dystopian future.
I also wanted the story to be one of morally grey zones, not black and white, and not to shy away from violence -- however clumsy that violence might be.
