I worked in the mental health field in the 1990's in central Vermont. It was my first real job and I couldn't believe that my job title was so long: Psychosocial Rehabilitation Counselor. I worked in a day treatment program in which I supported job development and training for adults with mental illness. I could be found more often than not driving the agency van around with clients on our way to pick up recycling, mow lawns, or staff a soup kitchen. In the way that only working side-by-side can, the camaraderie and mutual respect we had for each other helped me grow as a person. I can only hope I had as positive an influence on my clients as they had on me. This novel is written in honor of them.
