I never am afflicted with writer's block, though my ideas receive nourishment on the dirt and snow-covered trails that abound around the world.

I read of an athlete who finished the brutal 150-Mile Winter Ultra race on foot [called "The Tuscobia Winter Ultras"], then had the audacity to wake up the next morning and do it again on his own. As Senior Editor of Snowshoe Magazine and fan of endurance events, I called him to understand the whole race and motivation. I wrote the article, then continuing research because the topic absorbed my imagination, I put the story in the form of a book "The 300-Mile Man." THAT led to a followup edition that expanded on the whole winter endurance culture and events with additional research titled "The 300-Mile Man: Triple Crown Edition." I have learned that opportunity does not knock; it taps, and often so softly that it gets lost in the noise of the day. Hearing that tapping instigated the initial phone call; then came an article plus two books thus far.
