Since my book "Cracks in the Heart" was inspired by a true event, I was there the night before the Baldwin Hills Dam ruptured. For years, young people flocked there for smooching time, essentially 'lovers lane'. My future husband and I were parked alongside the dam when I noticed water seeping out of the concrete. Yes, I was shocked and curious, but my youth prevented me from seeing any actual danger. After the tragedy took place the next day, I was there at the base of the mountain with my dad who photographed the sad situation. Never did my parent know how close I was to being swallowed up by the chasm. Nor, being at 'lovers lane' that night.
