There were several parts of this novel inspired by true events. Most notably, that The French House does exist at the University of Wisconsin, and that CIA MKUltra research took place at the University's psychology department. The two were never linked in any way, and all other coincidences or similarities end there. The truth is sometimes indeed stranger than fiction and the poisoning in Pont St. Espirit did indeed occur and may have been linked to the CIA.
